Project: Proposed Derryfadda Wind Farm

Dear members of Galway County PPN,

Earlier this year, Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables, two leading low-carbon energy providers, announced their formation of a joint venture to develop a series of onshore wind energy projects. This partnership will deliver up to 800MW of new renewable energy generation for Ireland.

As part of this joint venture, Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables are proposing to develop a wind farm on Derryfadda, Boughill and Gowla Bogs located in County Galway, along the border with County Roscommon. The proposed wind farm will be known as Derryfadda Wind Farm. Please see the enclosed map for details of the study area for the proposed development.

The proposed wind farm, to be jointly developed by Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables, will contribute towards goals set out in Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2024. Working together, both companies will leverage their extensive expertise, resources and presence across Ireland to generate positive outcomes for the local communities, local economies and climate change.

The proposed development of Derryfadda Wind Farm will contribute to both Ireland’s and the European Union’s renewable energy targets. It will also contribute to increasing the security of Ireland’s energy supply and will facilitate a higher level of energy generation and self-sufficiency.

As the project is at a very early stage, the proposed number, location and height of turbines have not yet been determined. It is very important to us that local communities have the opportunity to provide feedback to help inform the design, construction and operation of the proposed wind farm.

The joint venture partnership is fully committed to informing and engaging with you through an active communication programme. As part of this, we have appointed a Community Engagement and Stakeholder Team including a designated Community Liaison Officer, Shane (087-0665640), to engage with local communities and near neighbours. At this stage of the project, we are seeking feedback from the community on the proposed intention to develop a wind farm on these bogs.

Accompanying this letter please find enclosed a Project Information Pack consisting of:

  1. A Project Information Booklet
  2. A Feedback Questionnaire and Freepost Envelope
  3. An A2 Double Sided Map – outlining the study area for the proposed development.
  4. A Consent Form – to join our postal / email list or opt-out form should you not wish to receive any postal communication regarding the proposed development.

This information pack is also being circulated to local residents living in the vicinity of the proposed development.

In addition, we intend to hold a series of Community Engagement Sessions for members of the public at the following locations:
